Society for Sexual Education Treatment and Research (CETAD) was founded in 1998 by 11 psychiatrists and psychologists working in the field of sexuality. The purpose of our Association which today has 130 members, could be summarized in this way: to establish coordination among professionals from different disciplines working in the area of sexuality, to give education on the subject of health professionals' sexual therapies, to ensure sexual therapy is being done in a manner appropriate to scientific standards and rules of ethic, and to contribute to the sexual education of the community.
WHAT DOES CETAD DO?
On a regular basis we are organizing academic meetings under the name CETAD DAYS:
*CETAD DAYS-I December 11-12, 1998. We covered the subjects "Current Therapies for Sexual Dysfunctions and Recent Developments in Cognitive Psychotherapies".
*CETAD DAYS-II November 24-26, 2000. We hosted a debate on topics of Sexual Education between those giving sexual education in our country in various institutions, to different groups, with differing methods, and the professionals (sexual therapists, doctors, psychologists, pedagogue teachers, nurses) who are educating sexual education teachers.
*CETAD DAYS-III took place under the title of "Psychiatry and Sexuality" as part of the 7th Spring Symposium organized by the Turkey Psychiatry Association on April 30-May 4, 2003 in Kemer, Antalya.
*CETAD DAYS-IV took place in Malatya under the title "Sexual Dysfunctions" at the Psychiatry Fall School-IV held on September 5-9, 2005.
*CETAD DAYS-V was put together under the title "The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and the Media in Sexual Health" as part of the last session of a one year project organized by CETAD in 2006-2007 called "Advocating Sexual Health and Reproductive Health with National and Local Media", which was also financed by the European Union and supported under the Ministry of Turkey Health Department's Turkey Reproduction Health Program.
Again we are regularly organizing our more general "Sexual Problems and Therapies Congresses" with participation from different disciplines such as psychiatry, psychology, urology, and gynecology:
*On November 26-28, 1999 we held the third Sexual Problems and Therapies Congress during the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Engin Eker together with the Association for Behavioral Cognitive Therapy.
*On March 29-31, 2002 during the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Arşaluys Kayır we held the Fourth National Sexual Functions and Dysfunctions Congress.
*On May 24-26, 2004 during the chairmanship of Dr. Nesrin Yetkin we held the Sexuality and Sexual Therapies Fifth National Congress in Istanbul.
*On November 24-26, 2006 during the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Şahika Yüksel we held the Sexuality and Sexual Therapies Sixth National Congress in Istanbul.
*On November 21-23, 2008 during the chairmanship of Associate Prof. Dr. Cem İncesu we held the Sexuality and Sexual Therapies Seventh National Congress in Istanbul.
Not only are we concerned with sexual therapies in our country based on scientific criteria but at the same time we are sensitive to therapy being done in accordance with rules of ethics. In our February 13, 2002 board meeting, the addition of the CETAD Rules of Ethics was accepted, and the addition of an Honor Board to the existing groups within CETAD, with the aim of endeavoring to apply these rules in practice, was accepted. Our Honor Board was formed at our 2004 board meeting and began working then. We are planning to work in collaboration with establishments like the Turkish Medical Association and Psychiatric Association of Turkey.
We purpose to make our voice heard not only on a national level but at the same time on an international level: For this reason, at the 16th World Sexology Congress held in Cuba in March 2003, CETAD applied to and was accepted as a member of the World Association for Sexology for the purpose of being able to establish more effective communication with establishments having activities of similar purpose in other countries, and of being able to focus on international events in the near future.
Since the year 2001 we are running an organized education program on the subject of sexuality and sexual therapy:
Beginning in the year 2001, we have started an education program with the purpose of equipping health professionals on the subject of sexuality and sexual therapies which require special training and experience
We ran a project called "Advocating Sexual Health and Reproductive Health with National and Local Media" with the slogan, "LIFELONG SEXUAL HEALTH IS YOUR RIGHT TOO!" It ran for one year, from June 15, 2006 to June 15, 2007 and was also financed by the European Union and supported under the Ministry of Turkey Health Department's Turkey Reproduction Health Program. Under this project we also prepared a media guide titled "Sexual Life and Problems" including eight informational files, and the book "The Sexual and Reproduction Health Research 2006".
From April 17 2008 to January 17 2009, we did a spot every Saturday called "Sexual Health Corner" by CETAD and TAP Foundation on Haberturk Television's live Medical program hosted by Esra Kazancibasi every Saturday and Sunday from 3:10 to 4:20, with the contribution of expert guests chosen alternately by CETAD and TAP Foundation.
We are also holding informative and supportive meetings on the first Thursday of every month joined by members of the Lambda Istanbul Family Group and those who have learned that their child, sibling, or any relative is homosexual, bisexual, transvestite, or transsexual and who want to talk about this subject.
